Aidan Malley says on AppleInsider: “Apple has set the groundwork for instant messaging on the iPhone and other touchscreen devices with an application for a patent on a universal interface for real-time text chat services.”
So far, Apple's business model has been to sell the iPhone through exclusive deals with one carrier per country, with trailing revenue in the form of a percentage of airtime payments. But that may be about to change.
