HTC Gearing Up to Release Shift UMPC for CDMA/EV-DO Carriers
Powerhouse Windows Mobile original design manufacturer HTC is apparently prepping a version of its Shift micro PC, mini laptop, UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) - whatever you prefer to call it - with EV-DO 3G for CDMA carriers.
This information was gleaned from everyone's favorite leaky faucet government agency, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which has posted some, but not much, data about this device as part of its approval process. All devices using U.S. airwaves must receive a thumbÿÏÍs up from the FCC before shipping. The Shift, introduced half a year ago for GSM mobile operators that use UTMS/HSPDA 3G cellular-wireless technology, is HTC's first product based on a desktop version of Windowsòthe Vista Business edition to be precise. Interestingly, the FCC does not refer to the Shift as the Shift at all, but only through its model number, CLIO200. The first edition of the Shift sported the model number CLIO100. The FCC also reveals the CDMA/EV-DO version of the shift, like the GSM/UTMS/HSPDA edition, sports 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. ThatÿÏÍs about all the FCC offers, however. If it is anything like the first Shift model though, the new edition will measure about 8.1 x 5.1 x 1.0 (207 x 129 x 25 millimeters) when closed and weigh in at around 1.7 pounds (800 grams). It'll also include HTC's proprietary SnapVue shell, a kind of mini-mobile-device platform unto itself, with its own dedicated 400MHz CPU and memory to provide instant access, as Windows Mobile does, to features like e-mail, texting, contacts, e-mail, etc.; all without booting up the shift's Vista operating system, which wouldn't be very fast or convenient for those on the move. SnapVue is also a battery saver, promising a couple of days of standby time. By contrast, using the Shift in Vista mode is only supposed to get you a lowly two hours of power. The current mode alsol runs on 800MHZ processor, 1GB of RAM and the option of a 40GB or 60GB hard disk drive. There's a fingerprint scanner, which is great for security, a Secure Digital slot for storage expansion, and a GPS receiver for location-based services as well. Additional features include a 7-inch touch screen, which reveals a full QWERTY keyboard when tilted up or moved to the side. There's no word on when the CDMA/EV-DO edition of the Shift will make it to the United States. The first Shift model is currently available throughout Europe.
