Nokia Tube to compete with iPhone

2008/04/11

A new phone which is set to rival Apple's iPhone is being developed by Nokia.

Finnish company Nokia has confirmed that it is working on a touchscreen phone - the Tube - which is set to rival Apple's iPhone.

The handset will be the phone manufacturer's first touch device and is likely to be powered by an updated version of the Symbian operating system.

Nokia spokesman Tom Libretto, speaking at a developer conference in the US, hinted that the new device will have one significant difference to the iPhone - standard Java built-in support.

Mr Libretto confirmed that the Nokia Tube will allow its users to upload to the web, which means that the new device will have to come with Wi-Fi or HSDPA connectivity.

Despite not indicating any release timeframe for this new phone, the spokesman said that Nokia is not afraid to compete with Apple's iPhone.

To underline his point Mr Libretto noted that Apple has shipped six million iPhones so far, adding: "We've done that volume since we've had dinner on Friday."
