iPhone Review

2008/06/01

I recently gave into the huge appeal Apple have and went out and purchased an iPhone. Because of this I thought I should prehaps review it.

The first iPhone I got manged to get fried and overheated within 5 hours. I was listening to music with the iPhone on charge and it suddenly decided to stop. I think this maybe a problem with the charger so we can let Apple off this.

The next day I got iPhone #2. After getting the iPhone home I managed to do all the setup I could within 45 minutes - thats pretty good for uploading 960 songs and video's. What I didn't like was down to O2, it took a good 4 hours for my iPhone to become active on the O2 network... With iPhone #1 it took 1 minute so once again we can let them off (it was a Sunday).

I find the text limit and minutes supplied in the iPhone contract very good, much better value than competing companies offer. I was paying £70 per month because I over used my old phone, I don't think I will have any problem this month! The O2 service seems very good, I haven't had "Emergency Service" come up once which is pretty good.

Back to the actual phone...

One of the main reasons I purchased the iPhone was for the iPod capibilities. In my opinion it has lost a certain level of quality that the iPod has been associated with. I'm finding tracks jumpy and slightly distorted at times. Another issue is that it sometimes just ends the song 1/2 way through, this is completly random so it isn't to do with my song being incorrectly encoded. Wierd 'ey...

Once my iPhone was on the O2 service I decided to test it out in the local woods. WOW! I was missing my beloved Man UTD to spend time with a great friend (it was the right decision); it didn't stop me wanting to know the score... All I did was grab my iPhone and browse to skysports.com and check the latest score. Turns out Man UTD had won the Premiership again. That was all done over GPRS... I can't lie to you and say it's as good as home internet browsing but it's the internet...on your phone...when you need it! Another great example of this was today. I decided I had a fancy for a Subway, now I know there are 2 in town but there could be one closer? Right? All I did was click the google maps icon and search "Subway", it instantly dropped 10 near Subway stores on the map for me - along with their address and phone number.

There are many other features such as the camera and email, you can even use both together! Great for taking quick snap shots of your friend and emailing it to all your friends in seconds. It is very handy to sit and be able to read your spam mail while bored, you can also read important mail but spam is a good last resort.

As for the usability of the iPhone, I mean, wow. Apple really do know how to build user interfaces. It is a simple pick up and play device. Samsung has recently released an iPhone rip-off, my Dad decided to buy this. He is a pretty technical guy so you would expect someone like him to understand how to use it. Wrong. It is a horrible confusing iPhone rip-off, you can never substitute the real thing.

In conclusion, the iPhone is a definate great device. There are some iPod issues with it but I'm sure they can be easily sorted. An idiot can use the iPhone well, I would definetly reccommend it.
