Blackberrys causing worker overtime demands

2008/06/29

Blackberrys are becoming the focus of workers' rights cases, as employees argue they are now working 24/7.

The rise in use of Blackberrys in business has led to some staff asking for paid overtime when they are working out of hours.

Julia Angwin, a Wall Street technology reporter, said: "BlackBerry usage after-hours becomes extremely intrusive. It can take up your whole evening, your whole day on a weekend. In that case, it really is like being at work and is like overtime."

An article in the National Law Journal has said some lawyers are advising firms who use managed Blackberry services to create overtime policies, to prepare if they get sued.

CBS News states the use of Blackberrys is a "cultural craze" which "borders on addiction" for some people.

The future of the Blackberry has been questioned lately with the release of the new iPhone, which is said to be targeted more towards businesses than the previous model.
