Java Medical Apps for Palm

2008/07/19

Do you have Java installed in your Palm? I do - and I use it mainly for Opera Mini and the Gmail client for PalmOS. I also run a Stockwatch application which gives me real-time share prices, and I subscribe to Minowireless.com which is a VOIP service provider, their Palm application being Java based. There are plenty of other Java apps out there - you can get some from Midlet.org and I notice there are a few medical ones there.

However I want to mention two free medical ones I spotted in Pocketgear which might interest you:

Screen Master 1.0

Screening guidelines for: - cervical, colorectal, breast, thyroid & prostate cancer.

and

HFSS Calc 1.0

The Heart Failure Survival Score (HFSS) can be used to predict the 1 year mortality risk in patients with severe congestive heart failure. This can help in decision making for patients referred for cardiac transplantation.

Don’t have Java installed in your Palm? There was news that Java is no longer officially supported by Palm (something to do with Palm no longer having the rights to distribute JVM for Palm OS) but you can apparently still download it here - grab it while the link still works!
The best application which justifies installing Java on your Palm is without doubt Opera Mini. This browser does a far better job of rendering full sized web pages than Palm’s built-in Blazer web browser. I simply love the excellent preview and zoom feature you get with Opera Mini. Some users may face stability issues with Opera Mini on their Palms but if you do, you might want to read this recent post by ScottyB in Palmaddicts with useful tips on how to tweak the Opera Mini installation. Scotty also lists an alternate download for Java from mytreo.net
It will be a pity if Palm does not support Java for it’s future devices since there are developers out there who do want an easy way to write applications for multiple mobile devices and Java is one way to do so. I wonder if there will be Java for the Palm Nova?
