China (mainland) – China Telecom Corp. Ltd (China Telecom) has announced the completion of an IPTV technology R&D laboratory built in its Shanghai research facility.
With an objective of making local technical standards at par with international requirements, the IPTV R&D laboratory focuses on product quality through its test and authorization services for local IPTV platform and terminal suppliers.
The company started the projected in 2005, in cooperation with Shanghai Media Group (SMG), a news, TV and radio broadcasting, and Internet company. IPTV testing on information browsing, video media and live broadcast services will be done in 17 cities across China.
So far, the IPTV licenses issued by the China government are under both IPTV broadcasting stations and telecommunications carriers.
China Telecom’s IPTV subscriber base is about 1 million as of May 2008. It is expected to reach 2 million by the end of 2008.
